Medellin River Water

Can fish live in the Medellín River? In this hands-on adventure, students become environmental scientists to investigate the health of a real river. They will collect water from the river, test its pH, measure temperature, observe sediment, and explore microorganisms under a microscope. Using real data they collected themselves, they’ll answer the question that drives this investigation.

Description
In this two-hour field experience, students step into the role of environmental scientists. They’ll collect water samples, conduct experiments, and make observations just like scientists do. Through interactive activities and small-group investigations, students learn how asking questions and testing ideas helps us understand the natural world.
Students begin by exploring pH, the scale scientists use to measure how acidic or alkaline a substance is. They taste the difference between plain water and lime water, test their own saliva, and learn how to measure pH using scientific strips. Then they apply their skills to the river itself. Freshwater fish usually thrive in water with a pH between 6.5 and 8.5, so students test the river water and compare their results to the conditions needed for this type of aquatic life.
Next, students investigate other factors that affect whether fish could survive in a river. Working in small teams, they measure water temperature, observe sediment levels (how much mud and particles are suspended in the water), and examine drops of river water under a microscope to search for microorganisms. By the end of the activity, students combine their evidence and discuss what they discovered. Along the way, they will have discovered if fish can live in the Medellín River.
