Ramp it Up!

Available spaces: 12

Cost:
40.000 COP

In this engaging 2-hour adventure, young learners become motion scientists who investigate the forces that shape motion—gravity, friction, air resistance, mass, speed, and acceleration. In small groups, students design their own experiments, make predictions, test ideas, collect evidence, and modify their cars to solve the challenge: How can we make our car go the fastest? At the end, teams present their redesigned race cars in a final ramp competition to see whose design is the fastest.

Description

Using ramps, toy cars, and everyday materials, students explore key physics ideas such as gravity, mass, friction, air resistance, speed, and acceleration through experimentation and discovery. The session begins with short demonstrations that introduce the forces affecting motion and challenge students to think about what makes objects move faster or slower.

Students then work in small teams where they make predictions, run experiments, and record their observations as they test how different variables affect speed. Groups explore whether heavier or lighter cars move faster, how the shape of the front of the car influences air resistance, and how reducing friction on the wheels can change performance. Using simple materials—such as tape, batteries for mass, cardboard, and plastic—teams redesign and modify their cars while collecting evidence about what works best.

The experience culminates in a final ramp race, where each team presents their redesigned car and tests its speed against the others. Throughout the process, students practice the core skills of scientific inquiry: asking questions, forming hypotheses, testing ideas, collecting data, and explaining results with evidence.
