In this two-hour, hands-on adventure, students become market researchers discover real shopping trends in a local mall. Working in small teams, they determine what information they need to collect, observe shopper behavior, count foot traffic, record purchases, and analyze which types of stores attract the most visitors. Using simple data collection methods similar to those used by retailers, students will identify patterns and use evidence to recommend which new store would likely perform well.

Description
In this interactive field investigation, students step into the role of market analysts to explore how businesses decide what products to sell and where to open new stores. Instead of learning about economics from a textbook, students investigate the mall itself—observing shoppers, identifying popular store types, and developing their own research questions about consumer behavior. Working in small groups, they practice the same kind of observational research that companies use when studying real markets.
Teams collect data by measuring foot traffic, observing what kinds of stores attract the most visitors, and noting how many shoppers appear to make purchases. Retail businesses often track this type of information because it helps them understand how many visitors a store attracts and how effectively it turns those visitors into customers (a metric called conversion rate).
After gathering their data, students analyze their findings to identify patterns and opportunities. Which types of stores attract the most attention? Are certain areas busier than others? Are there gaps in the types of businesses offered? Using their observations and simple calculations, each group develops a recommendation for the best new store to open in the mall, and presents a short business pitch supported by the evidence they collected during their investigation.
